A self-contained centre providing world class training, research, test and evaluation facilities, the Flight Physiological Centre in Linköping Sweden offers a range of services, from turnkey off the shelf training, through to access to controlled testing environments.

Providing first class facilities for the effective physiological training of military and civil aircrew and controlled environments for human physiology research and equipment testing, the Flight Physiological Centre (FPC) is continuing to consolidate its world-leading status in this specialist field. The Centre is managed and operated by QinetiQ Sweden AB on behalf of The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) and provides turnkey and bespoke training and research services for customers all over the world.

Facilities at the FPC site in southern Sweden include a Dynamic Flight Simulator for G-tolerance training of aircrew, a Hypobaric Chamber and dedicated demonstration room for hypoxia awareness training, a Hyperbaric Chamber for training in high pressure environments and a test pool for sea survival training. There is also a gym, a series of briefing and conference rooms, a medical treatment room, full video and data recording capabilities and other support facilities for students and approved visitors at the highly secure site.

The FPC has provided flight physiological training for the Swedish Air Force for more than two decades. Ongoing investment has ensured the Centre maintains the agility and mission-led capabilities to meet the increasingly complex, diverse and demanding requirements of customers – not just in aviation, but also in the world of space and maritime.  Today, all customers benefit from the latest advances in test and evaluation technologies as well as our highly respected and experienced team of specialist trainers, research technologists, medical scientists and data analysts.

Our core training courses feature a range of modules to cover both introductory and advanced training requirements and have been developed to provide invaluable and highly effective learning experiences for personnel.

By replicating potentially hazardous real-life challenges within a safe and controlled environment, we are able to provide a truly immersive experience to fully prepare individuals for the challenges they could encounter in their professional careers. Specialist advice and instructions are also provided to reflect each person’s physiological responses. We will also develop bespoke courses to meet the specific training requirements of a customer - please get in touch if you would like to discuss this further.

Military aircrew training

Our training courses for military aircrew cover High G, hypoxia awareness, spatial disorientation and test pool training, with all courses tailored to meet the specific needs and abilities of individuals. The FPC holds a US Air Force Certificate of Recognition and all courses meet the requirements of Standard Nato Agreement (STANAG) and are delivered by highly experienced Swedish Air Force pilots.

Civil aircrew training

Our training courses for civil aircrew are tailored to meet the specific requirements of different airlines as well as the needs and abilities of individuals. Our courses cover hypoxia awareness, sea survival and spatial disorientation and tailor our courses to each Airline’s requirements.

Civil Air Crew Training

Spaceflight training

Our Dynamic Flight Simulator (DFS) can replicate G-forces and combined G-forces in any direction. This makes it very suitable for commercial spaceflight simulation and training. We have been able to accurately replicate all the established commercial spacecrafts of today and their intense G-forces during launch and reentry. The Zero gravity experience in between launch and reentry is simulated in a reclined floating position with our planet earth and the milky way galaxy stars to admire in the black sky as the gravity gradually takes over again for the final descent which can push your body back into the seat with a force of up to 6G before you safely return to the ground again.

Research and equipment testing

Our Dynamic Flight Simulator provides a cost-effective and safe means to simulate environments that are difficult to encounter in the real world. It provides an invaluable tool for flight physiology research programmes and evaluation exercises in the development cycle of new technologies and equipment for use in high G or low pressure environments, as well as sea survival.

From equipment for Formula 1 cars to manned spacecraft, our DFS provides a highly effective research and testing environment to help maximise performance and establish capabilities, tolerances and assurances at an early stage in product development. This helps to minimise wasted time, effort and money during the development and production process. Working with research and medical scientists from a range of technology, military and scientific organisations, we are also helping to extend knowledge and insight in all areas of flight physiology.

Medical Evaluation and Treatment

Our suite of medical facilities enables us to carry out a wide range of preparatory and evaluation activities and our controlled environments support the medical treatment of certain disorders - such as our Hypobaric Chamber being used to treat Meniere’s disease.

The Flight Physiological Centre is a self-contained operation with dedicated test facilities that include a Dynamic Flight Simulator, a Hypobaric Chamber, a Hyperbaric Chamber, a Sea Survivability Test Pool and a Hypoxia Demonstration Room.

There is also a gym, a series of briefing and conference rooms, an emergency treatment room, full video and data recording capabilities and other support facilities for students and approved visitors at the highly secure site.

The Dynamic Flight Simulator

Designed for G-tolerance training of aircrew, research and development in acceleration physiology and medical evaluations of aircrew personnel. It is a combination of a flight simulator and a centrifuge with a fully configurable gondola/cockpit that will deliver acceleration up to 10G/sec and a maximum force of 15G. All training G-profiles and aircraft model simulations are custom adjustable for various applications.

Dynamic Flight Simulator

The Hypobaric Chamber

Designed to familiarise flight deck and cabin crew with the hazards and personal symptoms of hypoxia, a potentially serious condition where there is a loss of oxygen to the brain as a result of a sudden loss of cabin pressure or due to malfunctioning oxygen supply at high altitude. The chamber is also used for application screening of pilot and aircrew applicants, medical treatment for conditions such as Ménière´s syndrome as well as medical evaluations, equipment testing and rapid decompression.

The Hyperbaric Chamber

Designed to provide a safe high pressure environment for training, medical research/treatment and familiarisation. The main chamber can be used as a rescue chamber for diving accidents or for treatment of decompression sickness and hyperbaric oxygen treatment.

The Test and Training Pool

Designed to provide sea rescue and survival training for aircrew of all types of aircraft and helicopter - with life support equipment and generated waves, wind, rain and complete darkness. The Test Pool is also used for research and development of new equipment.

Test Pool

The Normobaric Hypoxia Demonstration Room

Designed to familiarise pilots and cabin crew with the hazards and symptoms associated with hypoxia in a safe classroom environment. Hypoxia is a condition where mental ability and awareness is compromised by a reduction in oxygen supply to the brain resulting from a sudden loss of cabin pressure or due to malfunctioning oxygen supply at high altitude. The demonstration room promotes better understanding of this potentially serious condition as well as early recognition of each individual’s personal symptoms.

Any visitor must have a confirmed appointment to be allowed on site at the Flight Physiological Centre. On arrival, you will need to present your appointment details to the FPC Security Guards.
